Now that the weather is warmer and we’re seeking more time outside, walking is a great way to boost your health in more ways than one. Walking is easily one of the most underrated forms of exercise- it is accessible to almost everyone and can be one of the simplest ways to combat our modern sedentary lifestyle. We used to walk for everything: transportation, finding food, exercise and the list goes on… but now our lives have developed a sense of convenience. However, that doesn’t mean that our bodies don’t still crave walking. Walking, especially outdoors, is great for our cardiovascular system, our metabolism, our immune system, and our musculoskeletal system, not to mention our mental state.
When we take time to walk outside, either leisurely or with the intent for exercise, it increases blood flow or circulation. This ultimately is great for the heart because of the chance to filter and disperse fresh blood to our bodies which has been proven walking can help lower serum cholesterol and blood pressure.
Going for a stroll is also great for weight management due to burning calories alone as well as increasing metabolism from increased circulation to the digestive tract. Walking allows the blood sugar in a meal to be properly utilized by the body and kept at a steady state, especially when you go for a quick or casual walk after a meal. Maintaining a healthy weight and digestive system via walking can help lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity- and the best part is that it is completely free and without medical interventions!
Our musculoskeletal system loves walking because it has a low impact on the joints so those with arthritis can most likely still enjoy the benefits. It can even help decrease the symptoms of arthritis and lower the chances of arthritis developing at a young age. Walking is also great for the hips, legs, and core since it is the first form of movement we develop as infants after crawling- it helps bring us back to our muscles’ natural state of movement.
Our immune system loves outdoor walks because you get exposure to natural sunlight which is crucial for vitamin D, bringing it back to our digestive system, as well as our circadian system meaning we will get better rest at night. The immune system relies on vitamin D to help facilitate the use of other important vitamins and minerals to fight off allergies and illnesses that may be lingering. Plus the fresh air and oxygen helps to reinvigorate the body!
Our minds benefit from the break from screens and stressors. Mentally, walking gives the brain a chance to literally step away from what might be occupying your thoughts and focus on the rhythmic movement each step provides. Plus being outside in nature is known to help lower cortisol levels, hello again cardiovascular and immune system. With this break, the mind tends to become more creative and allows you to problem-solve a little better so that when your walk is over you are more focused and ready to conquer what lies ahead.
So get up and get off your computer to go outside for a walk – doesn’t have to be a long one or a vigorous walk. Start small, set a realistic goal of how much time you have or the area you have available – any amount will do. Bring your dog, a friend, your favorite music or podcast, anything that will encourage you to keep walking further and explore your surroundings!
If you have concerns or pains that keep you from enjoying walking please don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment so that our doctors can help you find a way to get back out there.
