Imagine a world where music did not have a chorus. This scenario best explains Chiropractic without adjustments. The adjustment is the primary form of chiropractic care, and can determine any further treatment integration into your treatment plan. As important as the adjustment is, it is necessary to understand when, and if you need one to make sure that the effects of the adjustment are best utilized. So, what is an adjustment and how is it best used?
The adjustment is the practice of aligning the pathway between joints and nerves in the body to restore its natural function. If a spinal vertebrae is misaligned, it can potentially impede its corresponding nerve root. When the nerve root has this kind of interference, it can inhibit the nervous systems’ ability to function properly. When the adjustment is performed, the doctor has already diagnosed the misalignment, direction, and force needed to correct the joints position. Application of these characteristics aims to stimulate the nervous system by restoring the joint to its normal position.
The doctors search for many characteristics surrounding the misaligned joints. The most obvious, pain or patients’ subjective finding. These do not always indicate the need for an adjustment. Before the actual adjustment, the doctor will screen the back to see where the adjustments are needed. During the adjustment, you may hear a “crack” or “click” indicating a joint cavitation. The noise that may be heard is inflammation that has managed to enter the joint space in the form of a gas. Once moved, the gas exits the joint space. Importantly, you do not need a noise to ensure the joint has moved. Many adjustments received do not experience the same sensation. Following the procedure, the doctor will confirm the joint movement by the same analysis conducted prior to the adjustment.
What are the benefits? The list is ongoing, however a few notable benefits you may gain from the treatment are ongoing postural changes, headache reduction, activities of daily living performance improvement, improved symptoms in chronic pain, tech neck, and more. There are no guarantees with the treatment, and each patient is different, which could lead to different results. With the potential for improved nervous system functions, our team strives to achieve your own personal health goals.
There are many forms of the adjustment, to which you can experience here at Salt and Spine Chiropractic. Dr. David and Dr. Paige went to different chiropractic schools, each learning very different approaches to the procedures. One benefit to care here is the ability to try either technique. With different schools of thought, the different methods tend to complement each other. Among the types of adjustments we offer, we include Diversified, Gonstead, Flexion Distraction, Extremity, Thompson Drop, and Activator Assisted methods. They may mix and match different types of adjustments that they best see would move the correct joints to their proper positions.
Importantly, every adjustment is different and can elicit a different response patient to patient.
